Description

Objectives

Enable the student to understand and use advanced numerical methods in the modelling of geomaterials and geotechnical structures.

Syllabus

Methods of analysis. Requirements of an exact solution. Finite differences method. Explict and implicit schemes. Finite element method. FEM applied to non linear problems. Behaviour of geometarials vs constitutive models. Elasticity, hyperelasticity, hypoelasticity. Failure criteria. Perfect plasticticy. Hardening plasticity. Numerical simulations of the dynamic response of geotechnical structures: viscous-elastic model; boundary conditions, frequency domain and time domain analyses; soil-structure interaction.

Prerequisites

Attendance of teh CU Modelling of Geotechnical Structures

Cross Competence Component

This course allows the development of transversal competences on Critical Thinking (strategic thinking and problem solving approaches), Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (written communication, time management and team work, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation) and Information and Media Literacy (use of computer tools, ability to locate and access information, as well as to structure and format documents) in the course works. The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.

Programming And Computing Component

The resolution of the course works includes a significant component of programming, that can be completed using Matlab or other prefered platform. The assessment percentage associated with these competences is around 20%.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
