Description

Objectives

Provide knowledge on to the design of hydropower systems to install in dams or in existing hydraulic infrastructures or facilities with potential to recover water energy.

Syllabus

1. Hydroelectric schemes: basic concepts and aim. 2. Hydroeletrical power houses: main components, turbine selection and operation criteria. 3. Design of the pipe system: optimal discharge, economical design of pipe diameter, construction and exploitation costs, benefits of electricty production. 4. Hydraulic transient analysis in pressurized pipes: main principles, surge protection solutions, simplified formulations, waterhammer software use. 5. Application of provided knowledge to the design of a hydropower system.

Cross Competence Component

This course includes the development of the following soft skills: - development of critical thought and individual opinion (i.e., criativity and strategy to solve problems), with a weigh of 1/10 of the assessment of the project, corresponding to 5% of the final assessment in the course; - development of interpersonal relations (i.e., communication, writing and team work), with a weigh of 1/10 of the assessment of the project, corresponding to 5% of the final assessment in the course; - learning and application of technologies of information and media (i.e., search and management of data and report organization), with a weigh of 1/10 of the assessment of the project, corresponding to 5% of the final assessment in the course.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
