Description

Objectives

Analysis and safety assessment of steel structures.

Syllabus

1. Materials. Choice of steel grade. Brittle fracture - toughness. Fatigue in steel structures. Corrosion protection 2. Cross sections local buckling. Stability of plates. Effective cross sections. Application to cold form profiles (LSF). 3. Lateral torsional buckling of beams and beam-columns. Elastic critical moment. Application to I and H cross section beams, with common situations. Safety assessment of beams and beam-columns with lateral torsional buckling. 4. Steel Frames. Classification of frames. Thethos for structurala anayis nad safety assessmnet of frames. 5. Bracing systems. Bracing systems for columns and beams. Evaluation of forces acting on the bracing systems. Analysis of the bracing systems behaviour and safety assessment 6. Connections in steel structures. Stress resultants and stresses distributions in connections plates. Safety assessment of plates. Hinged connections. Columns bases.

Prerequisites

Curricular units (UC) whose contents are considered as prerequisites to follow this curricular unit: Mechanics I, Mechanics II, Strength of Materials I, Strength of Materials II, Analysis of Structures, Steel Structures I.

Cross Competence Component

The CU allows the development of transversal skills in Critical Thinking, namely strategic thinking and approaches to problem solving; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (communication, organizational, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation in the study of subjects and problem solving) and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate the contents of elements of study and other bibliography). The soft skills component of the assessment should correspond to approximately of 5% of the total grades.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
