Description

Objectives

Introduction to the analysis and safety assessment of steel structures.

Syllabus

1.Materials. Steel mechanic properties and steel grades. Hot rolled and cold formed steel profiles. Aluminium. 2.Resistence of cross sections. Classification of cross sections. Ultimate limit states of resistance of cross sections for axial force, bending moments, shear and torsion. Interaction diagrams. 3.Columns. Buckling. Buckling length. Normalized slenderness. Initial geometrical imperfections and residual stresses effects. Buckling design curves. 4.Beam-columns. Beam-columns without lateral instability – Initial geometrical imperfections and residual stresses effects and amplification of the bending primary effects. 5.Basic notions in connections design. Welded connections - types of connections. Resistance of fillet and butt welds connections. Bearing type and slip resistance type bolted connections – Bolts and steel grades. Shear and tension resistance. Force distribution in bolts.

Prerequisites

Curricular units (UC) whose contents are considered as prerequisites to follow this curricular unit: Mechanics I, Mechanics II, Strength of Materials I, Strength of Materials II, Analysis of Structures.

Cross Competence Component

The UC allows the development of transversal skills in Critical Thinking, namely strategic thinking and approaches to problem solving; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (communication, organizational, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation in the study of subjects and problem solving) and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate the contents of elements of study and other bibliography). The soft skills component of the assessment should correspond to approximately of 5% of the total grades.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
