Description

Objectives

Introduction to the design of special structures: industrial buildings, long span floors and roof structures, offshore structures, tanks, silos and chimneys. Definition of actions and analysis models in special structures. Verification of limit states. Design of joints and bracing systems.

Syllabus

  1. Introduction: Special Structures - Definitions and classification; Special aspects of design. (2) Plane and space trusses: resistance and deformability. Bolted and welded joints of tubular steel trusses. (3) Cellular beams and castellated beams. (4) Plate girder beams. (5) Design of steel frame structures and bracing systems. (6) Uniform built-up compression members. (7) Offshore structures – types; definition of the actions; analysis and design of the superstructure. (8) Water tanks. (9) Silos. (10) Chimneys.

Prerequisites

Curricular Units (CU) considered prerequisites to attend this course: Mechanics I, Mechanics II, Strength of Materials I, Strength of Materials II, Structural Analysis; Steel Structures I.

Cross Competence Component

The CU allows the development of transversal skills in Critical Thinking, namely strategic thinking and approaches to problem solving; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (communication, organizational, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation in the study of subjects and problem solving), and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate content study elements and other bibliography). The soft skills component of the assessment should correspond to approximately of 5% of the total grades.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
