Description

Objectives

The student will be able to participate at the design and monitoring of embankments made of conventional and unconventional materials.

Syllabus

Mechanical and hydraulic characterization of earth and rockfill materials. Construction techniques. Compaction and soil treatment. Reference to earth and rockfill dams. Seepage control in embankments, dams and their foundation. Filters and drains. Instrumentation and monitoring. Geocomposits and their use in embankments. Embankments made of non traditional materials. Reference to Urban Solid Waste embankments and Tailing dams.

Prerequisites

Soil Mechanics, Mechanics I, Strength of Materials and Modelling of geotechnical structures.

Cross Competence Component

The CU allows the development of transversal competences on Critical Thinking (strategic thinking and problem solving approaches), Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (oral and written, organizational capacity and teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation and stress management skill), and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate media content), in the presentations and works.. The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.

Laboratorial Component

Some visits to the laboratory to contact with some materials, equipments and demonstration of some theoretical concepts (4h).

Programming And Computing Component

The use of a commercial computation program will be necessary in one of the practical works. The percentage of evaluation at this component is around 10%.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
