Description

Objectives

Acquire competences to conceive and design: 1) storm water and combined sewerage systems infra-structures; 2) Design marine outfalls and diffusers outlets. Acquire basic competences and knowledge for understand: - the basic concepts and physical definitions for the water quality characterization; - the institutional, legal and standard framework of the water quality; - the water use cycle, types and causes of pollution and their effects; - how to modell the Dissolved Oxygen in water bodies and the bacteriological pollution processes; - the characterization of different water bodies types (rivers, estuaries and lakes).

Syllabus

- Tipification and components of stormwater and combined sewer systems in urban areas. General Planning and design. Source control. Flows and pollutant loads. - Retention basins in combined systems. Options and selection criteria. Design methods: "Critical Precipitation" and simplified design method for estimate retention volumes. Characteristics and design of storm overflow dischagers. - Parameters for characterization of water quality in water bodies. Concepts of water biology. Methods of evaluating and monitoring water quality. Causes and types of water quality problems. - Regulation and standards in water quality control. Socio-economic issues of water quality. Water cycle use. - Oxygen balance in streams. Modelling notions. - Design of outlets and diffusers. Jets and Plumes

Cross Competence Component

Work in group and communication skills, both written and oral corresponding to the draft of reports and presentation, summing up approximately 10% of the total grades.

Laboratorial Component

The practical component is carried out at the Information Technologies Laboratory for the use of different modeling software (SWMM, QUAL2K, CORMIX).

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
