Description
Objectives
To develop and strengthen the students´ knowledge, skills and competences in the following topics: - Nuclear processes and reactions; - Physics of nuclear interactions; - Proton and neutron induced nuclear reactions and cross-sections; - Use of particle accelerators for Nuclear technology applications (spallation sources, transmutation of radioactive waste, energy amplifiers, in Medicine, in Environmental applications, in Services, etc.); - Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technologies; - Types and operation of nuclear fission reactors – basic principles; - Nuclear fusion reactors – basic principles and operation; - Radioactive waste inventory of nuclear reactors; - Radiotoxicity of radioactive waste generated in nuclear reactors; - Radiological and nuclear accidents and emergencies – case studies To contribute for a correct perception of the scientific, technological, technical, socioeconomic, ethical and legal aspects associated to the Nuclear Energy and Technology solutions.
Syllabus
I) Atoms and nuclei. Basic properties. Stability and decay. Nuclear structure and nuclear processes. Nuclear fission. Nuclear fusion. II) Nuclear Systems III) Particle accelerators IV) Nuclear reactors. Types of operation. Radioactive waste characterization and management. Radiotoxicity of radioactive waste.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Physics (Atomic, Nuclear, etc.)
Cross Competence Component
The following skills will be developped and strengthened: - Critical and innovative assessment and judgement, through the development of strategies for problems solving - Global citizenship, through the awareness for the scientific/technological, socioeconomic, ethical and legal, nuclear non- proliferation and security, associated to the production of electrical energy in nuclear reactors and to the utilization of nuclear technologies for applications related to Fundamental Science studies. - Intra-personnal skills, associated to the productivity and time management, motivation, etc. - Inter-personnal skills, by team work in the preparation of works and their oral communication and discussion - Literacy of the information and the media, through the search, retrieval and management of information on topics related to the works to be undertaken.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
