Syllabus
- The international system of Radiological Protection; epidemiological studies; radiological risk - Introduction to fundamental concepts, units and radiometric and dosimetric quantities - Protection quantities and operational quantities - External dosimetry - Internal dosimetry and biokinetic models - Photon dosimetry and neutron dosimetry - Charged particle dosimetry - Dosimetry of the medical applications of ionizing radiation - Radiation Protection of the patient in the medical exposures to ionizing radiation - Dosimetry of the industrial applications of ionizing radiation - Shielding assessment and shielding design methodologies - Computational dosimetry: Monte Carlo simulation methods - Microdosimetry and Nanodosimetry: basic concepts
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge about Radiation Physics
Cross Competence Component
The following skills will be developped and strengthened: - Critical and innovative assessment and judgement, through the development of strategies for problem solving - Global citizenship, deepening and raising the awareness about the scientific/technological,socio-economic,ethical and legal aspects associated to the use of ionizing radiation in the Health and industrial sectors and the assessment and analysis of their cost-benefit relationship and societal impact - Inter-personnal skills, by team work in the analysis and solution of case studies and the oral communication in their presentation and discussion. - Intra-personnal skills, developing the skills associated to the productivity and time management, motivation, etc. The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
