Description

Objectives

Provide the knowledge to allow the design of ships in composite material taking into consideration the fabrication process and the specific nature of each ship type.

Syllabus

Typical aplications of composite materials in the Maritime Industry. Physical and chemical propperties of polyester and epoxy resins. Mechanical properties of glass, carbon, aramit and other fibers. Properties of composite mats. Fabrication of panels and hulls. Vacuum and infusion technology. Bonding. Mechanical strength of bonded joints. Calculation of strength of panels and other typical ship components in composite materials. Calculation of strength of midship sections of ships based on classification rules and on finite elements. Design of different types of ship strutures in composite materials.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Mechanics of Materials and Ship Structures

Cross Competence Component

Soft skills considered through the development of the group assignments, laboratory activities, oral presentations of the developed assignments, and technical visit to an industry boatyard, to be considered by 10% on final grade.

Laboratorial Component

Analysis of material properties of typical composite materials used in the shipbuilding industry. Understanding the behavior of materials and determination of some chemical and mechanical properties of typical laminates.

Programming And Computing Component

Use of COMPOSITE IT software for the detailed strength analysis of composite panels and stiffneers on the marine industry, based on criterias from Classification society rules.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for all group's work. In any assessment every student should honestly disclose any help received or sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
