Description

Objectives

To know scantling of ship hull structures. To be familiar with the codes of the classification society relating to ship hull structural design. To study how the scantling of structural components is related to the global scantling of ship hull structures. To know how to analyse buckling of structural components, ultimate strength and plastic collapse, fatigue strength and structural reliability. To know how to design ship hull structures based on the Classification Societies Rules.

Syllabus

General aspects of ship structural design. Ship hull structural materials and material protection. Longitudinal and transversal structural components. Double bottom, side shell, deck and bulkhead structures. Design of ship structures based on Classification Societies Rules. Buckling of ship structural components. Buckling of column. Buckling of portal frames. Buckling of rectangular plates. Effect of imperfections. Plastic collapse of structures. Elasto-plastic behavior of material. Elasto-plastic behavior of beams. Ultimate strength of ship structures. Residual stresses. Fatigue strength of ship structures. Palmgren - Miner approach. Fracture mechanics approach. Fatigue assessment of ship structural components subjected on cyclic loading. Methods of reliability analysis. Assessment of safety index. Deriving of partial safety factors. Risk based ship structural design.

Cross Competence Component

The UC allows the development of transversal competences on critical thinking, namely strategic thinking and problem solving approaches, within the assignemnts, flash and paper presentations, and project. Interpersonal and intrapersonal skills (oral, organizational and teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation skills - within the assignemnts, flash and paper presentations, and project) and Information and media literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate media content - within the assignemnts, flash and paper presentations, and project). The assessment percentage associated with these competences is 20%.

Programming And Computing Component

Development of applications either in Matlab or in spreadsheet(s) and MARS2000. These components account for about 20% of the final grade.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for all group's work. In any assessment every student should honestly disclose any help received or sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
