Objectives

Gain an understanding of the potential of using biophysical characteristics in the context of spatial planning as an opportunity for development at various scales of intervention. Learn biophysical planning methodologies and techniques through their practical application. To know the legal instruments available to promote the integration of the biophysical dimension in land-use planning. Recognize the specificity of each site generating creative responses that make compatible and enhance the quality of life of the population. Valuing green infrastructure as a strategic element in policy integration. To enable the valorisation of the territory through ecosystem services.

Syllabus

(1) Concepts: Conceptual approaches to Environmental Planning. Green Infrastructures planning:evolution and conceptual background. Introduction to the concept of ecosystem services. Methodological approaches to ESS. Use of ESS in green infrastructure planning. Multifuncionality of GI and cultural values. Planning beyond the urban-rural devide. Multi-scale approach: urban- rural continuum. (2) From to concept to legislation: takling societal challenges in urban and rural areas. Integrating environmental policies into GI planning and implementation:from global to local. Insights into environmental policy framework with spatial impact across scales: water, soil, biodiversity, climate, agriculture, forest. GI governance. Making Green infrastruture planning for policy integration in spatial planning instruments. (3) Methods and tools in practice. Mapping ESS. Nature based solutions as an implemenation tool: tipologies and context.GI mapping. Project based learning environment.

Cross Competence Component

Critical thinking - innovation in the approach by objectives (20%) Interpersonal and communication skills - teamwork, oral presentations (20%) Information Literacy - search for geographic information and knowledge bases (10%) The evaluation of the former soft skills is estimated to correspond to 20% of the final grades.
