Description

Objectives

Acquisition of basic knowledge in the area of radar theory and applications. Contact with radar-specific signal processing techniques. Knowledge of the basic components of a radar receiver and transmitter.

Syllabus

1-Introduction: applications; types; basic equation. 2-Pulse Radars: PRF and ambiguity; noise statistics; minimum detectable signal; probability of detection and false alarm; pulse integration; filters and correlators; radar cross section of a target; fluctuation models; propagation effects; range. 3-CW Radars: unmodulated; CW-FM modulated radars: applications. 4-MTI Processing: coherent; cancellers; limitations on clutter elimination; uncoherent MTI; MTI on airborne platform. 5-Tracking Radar: switching lobes; conical exploration; amplitude and phase comparison monopulse; distance tracking. 6-Special Techniques: precision; optimal estimators; adapted gating and filters; pulse compression, linear FM; phase modulation; SAR and ISAR. 7-Antennas: types; phase controlled apertures, reflectors and arrays: multiple beam; beam forming. 8-Transmitters: solid state; vacuum; magnetron; klystron; TWT; comparative study.

Prerequisites

Approval on Antennas and Propagation course

Cross Competence Component

The flash oral presentation of advanced topics allows the development of several transversal skills: - oral communication techniques; - strategies for solving new problems; - teamwork; - programming; - ethics;

Programming And Computing Component

In the flash presentation of advanced topics, students are encouraged to present numerical simulation results obtained with MATLAB or MATHEMATICA.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
