Description

Objectives

To understand the fundamentals of today's railway engineering considering the different sub-systems. To achieve fundamental knowledge regarding railway operations To obtain specific knowledge regarding the design of railway infrastructures, and to acquire the competencies to implement it (project perspective).

Syllabus

1.INTRODUCTION TO RAILWAY ENGINEERING 1.1. Competitiveness and challenges of railway systems 1.2. Basics of railway systems technology 2. RAILWAY OPERATIONS 2.1. Capacity and train dynamics 2.2. Technical operation systems, safety and signalling 2.3. Organization of railway operations (planning of train movements) 3. RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE 3.1. Track components 3.2.Track geometry design 3.3. Track quality 3.4. Switches and crossings 3.5. Train- track interaction: lateral forces and resistance; Derailment 3.6. Track structural design i. Track-vehicle interaction and modelling ii. Track superstructure design iii. Track substructure design 3.7. Slab track systems 3.8. Railway tunnels 3.9. Track Maintenance

Cross Competence Component

The course allows the development of transversal competences, namely: strategic thinking and problem solving approaches; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (oral, organizational and teamwork - within the practical assignment (project P1) and presentations/discussions in class); and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate contents - within the assignments / presentations). The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
