Tendências e Desafios da Física Médica
Description
Objectives
The curricular unit aims for students to acquire a perspective on recent and emerging modalities of medical imaging and therapy using radiation. The topics will be introduced in order to integrate the knowledge from the other curricular units and in order to promote a critical assessment of the advantages and challenges in the application of each modality, encouraging discussion with the students. Whenever possible, experts in emerging areas of technology will be invited. The curricular unit also aims to familiarize students with the process of identifying and analyzing (in a simplified way) relevant scientific articles and patents on new technologies. A significant part of the curricular unit program will be updated annually to reflect the most recent developments.
Syllabus
1. Revision of basic concepts for development of new modalities 1.1. Radiobiology, conformity and dosimetry in radiation therapy 1.2. Image quality and dose reduction in medical imaging 1.3. Safety, quality, comfort, simplicity, time 1.4. Role of medical physics in the clinical implementation of new modalities 2. State-of-the-art and emerging therapeutic modalities 2.1. External beam radiotherapy 2.2. Brachytherapy 2.3. Nuclear medicine therapy 2.4. Hybrid therapeutic modalities 3. State-of-the-art and emerging modalities in medical imaging 3.1. Imaging for radiodiagnostic 3.2. Imaging for interventional radiology 3.3. Imaging for radiation therapy.
Prerequisites
The teaching and learning methodologies are aligned with the pedagogical model at IST, which is described in detail in section 4.5 of this dossier (see 4.5.1 and 4.5.2). In summary, the methodologies aim to promote learning based on problem solving and projects, reinforcing the practical component, active learning, creativity, autonomous work and student accountability. The assessment model incorporates elements of continuous assessment, designed to promote a continuous and active learning, and is compatible with the significant reduction in the weight of assessment by exams that is advocated by the pedagogical model.
Programming And Computing Component
Given the learning objectives described in 5, and as it can be seen by a specialist in the field, the learning objectives described in 6 are structured in increasing order of complexity of concepts. Additionally, the contents are illustrated with relevant examples and provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfil the learning objectives established. The syllabus covers the main topics of the curricular unit, allowing the student to review and deepen previous knowledge, as well as acquire new knowledge and be prepared to seek and validate the acquisition of additional information. Theoretical basis, essential concepts and application examples are provided. Students are prompted and encouraged to study and understand the contents and to develop the ability to solve exercises and transfer knowledge to new situations.
Ethical Principles
The teaching methodologies were designed so that students can develop a comprehensive knowledge, ensuring compliance with the objectives of the curricular unit. The methodologies will be based on the acquisition of knowledge about the different concepts through theoretical and theoretical- practical classes, and on an autonomous learning that is guided by the teachers and supported by the study elements made available. This approach will not only fulfil the learning objectives but will also help to level the knowledge of students with different backgrounds. The course promotes the development of Transversal Skills, and specifically of i) Critical and Innovative Thinking (Problem Solving Strategies) and ii) Interpersonal Skills.
