Princípios em Biologia do Cancro (Fmul)
Description
Objectives
Identify and understand key research and clinical challenges that can contribute to the advancement of understanding, prevention and treatment of cancer disease. Relate Cell Biology and Oncobiology, in an integrated perspective of contribution to the understanding of oncological disease in its various stages of development. Understand the concept of multifactorial and interactive disease, depending on the tumor-host context.
Syllabus
The "nature" of cancer. Cancer-host interaction. The (micro) environment of cancer: players, communication and intervention opportunities. Identification of host-dependent non-mutagenic mechanisms/factors and new prevention/treatment opportunities. Early detection: new methods and challenges. Mechanisms involved in the tissue specificity of oncogenes: hypotheses of prevention and treatment. Mechanisms involved in resistance to cell therapy (s) and cell dormancy: identification and treatment of micrometastases. Personalized medicine and clinical benefit in the current context of targeted therapies. Prognostic and predictive biomarkers in cancer. Combined therapies: sub versus over-treatment, benefit and patient stratification. Effect of the microbiome on therapeutic efficacy.
