Description

Objectives

Students are due to build up their knowledge on solid dosage forms and their characterization. The Course benefits from previous ones provided in the 1st semester allowing the integration of concepts and knowledge. The course emphasizes the equipment and facilities required to manufacture solid dosage forms. The main topics to be addressed are: . Excipients considered in the preparation of solid dosage forms; . Design of particles (crystal and particle engineering); . Technologies considered in granulation; . Compression of materials; . Encapsulation (macroencapsulation) of active pharmaceutical ingredients; . Technologies to coat the dosage forms; . Strategies to control the release of active pharmaceutical ingredients from dosage forms . Utilities (Services supporting manufacture of medicines - Water production, Air, Maintenance).

Syllabus

The study of physico (e.g. mechanical) and chemical (e.g. crystalline structure) of materials are considered on their processing. Processing starts with concepts on the design of particles by introducing the students to the techniques and fundamentals on crystal engineering and particle engineering. It follows by discussing the technologies used in granulation and their likely transformation into tablets or capsules. If required any of these entities are submitted to a process of coating. The Course includes the identification of potential packing materials (primary and secondary packaging), their judicious choice to promote the highest and longest stability of the medicine. Particular attention is given to the supporting services (utilities) to assure the manufacture of medicines according to the GMP (e.g. water supply, sterilization, air supply, maintenance actions, procurement actions).

Cross Competence Component

It is assumed that students are competent in using basic windows software and be able to evaluate experimental data using statistical methods and software. It is expected and promoted that students be able to integrate / complement teaching activities in the course with the contents of other courses within the MAster programme.

Laboratorial Component

NA.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be alble to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
