Sistemas de Posicionamento e Telecomunicações por Satélite
Description
Objectives
This course aims to introduce the basic principles of operation of both satellite navigation systems and satellite telecommunications systems. Students will become familiar with the main features and operation of today's satellite navigation and telecommunications systems. Skills will be acquired in satellite orbit characterization, satellite position determination, satellite-receiver relative geometry analysis, Doppler effect, link budget calculation, atmospheric attenuation, noise temperatures, signal-to-noise ratios. Additional skills will be gained in comparing different satellite constellations, precision dilution analysis, navigation equation resolution, pseudo-range processing and phase measurements, and the integration of GPS receivers into positioning and navigation applications.
Syllabus
1. Introduction to Telecommunications and Navigation Satellite Systems. 2. Reference Coordinate Systems. 3. Orbits and Constellations: Satellite orbits; Ephemerides and Keplerian elements; Disturbances in orbits; Satellite-receiver relative geometry; Transmitter-receiver dynamics, Doppler effect; Satellite constellations and coverage areas. 4. Calculation of Satellite Link Budgets: Uplink and downlink; Equivalent isotropically radiated power; Figure of merit and equivalent noise temperatures; Influence of the atmosphere; Transmission rates and bandwidths; Link performance. 5. Satellite Positioning and Navigation: Navigation messages, satellite ephemerides; Observable (pseudoranges and carrier phase); Estimation of receiver position - navigation equation; Precision dilution; Positioning and navigation models; Error budget. 6. Future Applications and Perspectives
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in trigonometry, linear algebra and programming.
Cross Competence Component
Continuous assessment with 3 mini-tests in 7 weeks helps to establish intrapersonal skills in productivity, time management and decision making. On the other hand, the adopted model of theoretical/practical classes facilitates interaction with students, and between students, and in the practical part of the classes students are motivated to solve exercises working with their colleagues as a team, which helps to establish interpersonal competences.
Programming And Computing Component
In classes, the exercises are solved using Matlab or Octave. This applies to numerical exercise resolution, visualization of results obtained, interaction with GPS receivers and data acquisition. In addition to these tools, some of the Google Earth programming interfaces will also be used to view the results of some exercises.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
