Órgãos de Máquinas
Description
Objectives
The Machine Elements curricular unit aims to develop and deepen the knowledge on fundamental mechanical components used in power transmission and in the support of rotating components. The course focuses on the analysis and design of typical machine elements found in complex mechanical systems, with emphasis given to rolling-contact mechanisms, gear meshing, and power transmission. It integrates prior knowledge acquired in other curricular units, such as strength of materials, fatigue design and joint design, in a holistic approach to machine design.
Syllabus
- Bearings: Rolling-contact bearings; function and main types; selection based on load type; service life and correction factors; mounting and operation; plain and journal bearings; operating conditions. 2) Gears: Function and main types; conjugate action and standard tooth profiles; manufacturing processes; spur and helical gears; bevel and worm gears; geometry, loads and design. 3) Gear Trains: Simple, compound and epicyclic gear trains; train value; kinematic analysis using the formula method and the tabular method. 4) Clutches and Brakes: Types of clutches and brakes; cone and disc clutches; disc, internal-shoe, external-shoe and band brakes; load analysis and design; common industrial applications. 5) Flexible Transmissions: Flat and V-belts; roller chains; transmission ratios and efficiency; pulleys and tension adjustment.
Cross Competence Component
Included in the development of the curricular unit project through independent group work, the oral presentation of the project and the joint writing of the final report.
Laboratorial Component
Not present
Programming And Computing Component
Included in the development of the curricular unit project through the coding of small programs in Matlab or Python (or equivalent) and in the use of spreadsheets.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
