Description

Objectives

To understand the context, theory, and evolution of transportation networks design, comprehending the challenges of the integrated design of transport networks and infrastructures within the territory, with particular focus on urban and peri-urban contexts. To acquire specific knowledge of geometric design and structural dimensioning of road, rail, cycling, and pedestrian infrastructures, developing the skills necessary for their practical implementation (project).

Syllabus

1. Fundamentals of Transport Networks - Accessibility and the evolution of transport networks - Decisions related to the development and integration of networks within the territory 2. Design of Road Networks in urban and peri- urban contexts – Criteria and Methods - Networks, layouts, and geometric design - Structural design - Practical applications (Project – Part 1) 3. Design of Rail and Tram Networks – Criteria and Methods - Networks, layouts, and geometric design - Structural design - Practical applications (Project – Part 2) 4. Design of Pedestrian and Cycling Networks – Criteria and Methods - Networks, layouts, and geometric design - Structural design - Practical applications (Project – Part 3) 5. Integration of Transport Networks - Mobility plans, hierarchy and prioritisation criteria and practices. Project (final).

Cross Competence Component

The course allows the development of transversal competences, namely: strategic thinking and problem solving approaches; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (oral, organizational and teamwork - within the practical assignment (project) and presentations/discussions in class); and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate contents - within the assignments / presentations). While designing an integrated transport infrastructure, considering the different constraints, students also develop their creativity.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
