Bases para o Projeto de Estruturas de Betão
Description
Objectives
The main objectives of this course unit are to consolidate the knowledge acquired in the course unit 'Concrete Structures' regarding the behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, in terms of safety at ultimate and service limit states, and to develop the basic skills required for the design of concrete structures. These skills will be further developed in the course units 'Design of Buildings' Structures' and 'Rehabilitation Design of Concrete Structures'.
Syllabus
1. FURTHER ASPECTS OF SERVICE BEHAVIOUR OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES Cracking: modelling and safety assessment. Effects of imposed and restrained deformations. Deformation: modelling and verification of serviceability criteria. 2. FURTHER ASPECTS OF BEHAVIOUR AND SAFETY VERIFICATION OF CONCRETE SLABS Beam supported slabs and flat slabs: analysis and design – panels as part of structural floor systems; reinforcement detailing. 3. ADVANCED TOPICS IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE Ultimate limit states. Prestressing in statically indeterminate structures – tendon layout. Prestress losses. 4. DISCONTINUITY REGIONS – STRESS FIELD MODELS Development of design models for discontinuity regions. Application to deep beams, corbels, anchorage regions and foundations. 5. STRUCTURAL FRAME SYSTEMS: ADVANCED ANALYSIS Columns in frame structures – evaluation of second-order effects.
Prerequisites
It is advisable that students have a solid background in the scientific area of Structural Mechanics and Structures, e.g., Mechanics, Statics, Strength of Materials, and Structural Analysis, as well as a sound understanding of the fundamentals related to the behaviour of concrete structures covered in the Concrete Structures course unit.
Cross Competence Component
This course also develops transversal skills such as: - Problem-solving, applying theoretical concepts to real projects; - Autonomy and time management, through the mini-project outside class hours; - Teamwork and communication, during practical exercises and discussions; - Critical thinking and decision-making, in the evaluation of design solutions; - Connection to professional practice, through the study visit. These skills prepare students for the professional practice of concrete structures design.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
