Description

Objectives

The curricular unit of Heritage and Digital Transformation aims to analyse and discuss the way in which information technologies have transformed the processes of study, conservation, dissemination and enjoyment of cultural heritage. Based on specialised bibliography, online resources and contributions from professionals from different areas, current issues will be identified and discussed, with a particular focus on heritage information systems and the digitisation of museum collections, taking into account their appropriation by different audiences. The various activities and debates to be held aim to provide a critical and transdisciplinary view of the changes associated with digital transformation, in the field of cultural heritage.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to the course. Fundamental concepts in the field of cultural heritage. 2. Technological systems and digital cultures. 3. Digitisation of cultural properties vs. digital heritage. 4. The impact of digital technologies on the experience of visitors to museums, monuments and sites. Interfaces and mediation systems. 5. Information systems for cultural heritage. Inventory, documentation and use by different audiences. Reference platforms, at national and international levels. 6. Art museums: digitisation of collections and open access. 7. Cultural heritage in the age of social media.

Cross Competence Component

The transdisciplinary nature of this curricular unit calls for several transversal skills, namely: a) the approach to heritage, in a perspective of valuing cultural diversity, aims to promote intercultural dialogue, tolerance and global citizenship; b) the proposed activities seek to contribute to increasing digital literacy; c) the debates held in class, the questionnaires and the group work are also intended to foster reflection, critical thinking and the integration of knowledge acquired in other areas, as well as to develop oral and written communication skills. These soft skills underlie the whole evaluation process, both in the individual component (40%) and in group work (60%).
